Teaching and Mentoring
One of my goals as a scientist is to give back to the community what I learn through research, course work and from others. I have done that through teaching assistantships, writing blogs, leading community science initiatives and creating instructive videos. I enjoy teaching and strive to create a comfortable and inclusive learning experience for students that fosters critical thinking and student engagement. In the classroom, I promote critical thinking through incorporating a diversity of teaching approaches including out of classroom activities, groups discussions and traditional lectures. When teaching through mentorship, I help undergraduate students working with me to develop and execute independent projects, providing hands on training in field and laboratory techniques and data analyses. Teaching is not limited to the classroom; therefore, I also aim to share my results with the public through online resources and in person talks, while also giving back to the community though joining community events and participating in local organizations.
In the classroom
As a student for many years, I have learned the value of engaged teachers and high-quality lectures and learning materials. I enjoy teaching and try to share my enthusiasm for science, and particularly for insects, with my students and the community. For example, many students aren't aware that we have more than 400 bee species in Maryland. Through hands-on laboratories, tools including iNaturalist, and group discussions, they get to better understand them and develop a greater appreciation and awareness for Maryland’s pollinator biodiversity. In the classroom, I introduce scientific knowledge and techniques (such as citation managers and case studies) to provide students with the necessary skills to discuss scientific literature, while highlighting real and diverse scientists. I also encourage active learning among students by sitting down with students, discussing a topic and asking questions. I aim to create an atmosphere where students feel comfortable being themselves, asking questions and making mistakes.

Outreach
Outside of the classroom, I enjoy developing extension resources, such as blogs and videos, that are easily and freely accessible to target audiences. I have also served as a board member for several organizations, including the University of Maryland Entomology Student Organization, Maryland Organic Food and Farming Association (MOFFA), and EntoQuest from the Entomology of America Eastern Branch.
